Social Media & Marketing Intern

It is often said that the best things in life happen unexpectedly. In this case, it’s true. I originally was supposed to an internship at another company, but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to find a different one last minute. I was then introduced to the founders of Cybiant, both whom I found to be energetic and ambitious about their start-up, which is always great to see. I was offered the position as a Social Media & Marketing Intern which I was happy about.

However, I had little to no understanding of Cybiant’s industry. I didn’t understand Big Data, I had no expertise in cybersecurity and let alone digital transformation. Needless to say, I couldn’t give an answer to my friends when they asked what my company does. Internships force you to learn quick – and that’s what I did. Within two weeks, I learned the ins and outs of Cybiant’s industry and where they stand in the Southeast Asian market.

Throughout my internship, I had plenty of opportunities to apply myself, provide value to Cybiant, and develop my personal skillset beyond my expectations. It’s impossible to list every experience down without boring the reader so I’ll highlight some of my most important ones:

  • Taking the Enterprise Big Data Professional course. I was given the opportunity of attending a 3-day training program where I learned the foundations of Big Data and learned various methods of analysing data, understanding algorithms, and gaining insight on the technical infrastructure behind Big Data as well. Taking this course enabled me to fully understand the Big Data industry, which in turn allowed me to maximise my value potential as an intern.
  • Representing Cybiant at the Human Resources Development Fund Malaysia. The purpose of the event was to elevate training passion amongst training partners and companies alike. I represented Cybiant’s interests by promoting their training courses to and explaining the value they provide to companies.
  • Creating & Procuring Information for the Cybiant Knowledge Centre. The Cybiant Knowledge Centre is a digital centre where people can find information regarding five different topics: Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Automation. Having to write several articles under each topic really broadened my understanding and knowledge of said topics.
  • Working in an office environment. This was my first position in an office atmosphere. I had some idea of what to expect, but every company is different so there’s a degree of adapting you need to do. The office environment at Cybiant is quite nice and relaxed. People are working, having conversations, listening to music. It feels like a team. Simply working in an office definitely teaches a person how to behave in a professional environment: how to respond to requests or questions, how to communicate and how to be part of a team.
  • Gained personal wisdom and insights. Still being 21 years old, it’s hard to pinpoint precisely what I want to do in the future. But working at Cybiant has given me a lot of chances to think about what I like, what I don’t like, and greater insights into what I believe would be my next preferred position in life. I’ve also gained a lot of wisdom, having been able to work closely with the CEO and co-founder. You can always learn something new from persons with experience.

As I leave, I want to thank everyone at Cybiant for the life-changing experience I was given. I am a firm believer that you should love where you work, because then you can truly provide value and have as much passion for seeing the company grow. As far as an internship goes, remember to always be friendly, work hard, and ask questions.
